Toyota Auris, 2012

Whistling from the front of the vehicle

Problem description

Whistling from the front of the vehicle
A whistling sound appeared in a 2012 Toyota Auris at a speed of 100 km/h. The sound was loudest when the vehicle reached operating temperature. Several components at the front of the vehicle were visually inspected, but the source of the noise could not be determined.

Solution

1. The aforementioned problem is caused by vibrations of the brake pads resonating on the front brake calipers, which generates noise at a constant speed between 70 and 120 km/h. To rectify the fault, disassemble and check if the front brake pads have a slot as shown in the image below.

2. If there is no slot, replace the pads with modified ones that have a slot. Verify the repair with a test drive.
