Hybrid Drive and Engine Warning Lights
The service technician reports difficulties in diagnosing certain faults on a 2013 Toyota Prius vehicle. Specifically, the hybrid drive and engine warning lights are illuminated. Additionally, the technician observed overheating of the hybrid drive battery.
1. It is imperative that all workshop personnel working on hybrid vehicles are adequately trained to perform all necessary operational procedures. When working with high-voltage circuits and components, adhere to all safety guidelines. We also recommend disconnecting the hybrid drive battery before commencing work. Based on the described symptoms, the fault is likely caused by foreign objects or debris restricting the operation of the hybrid battery cooling fan, thereby reducing or stopping the airflow.
2. Remove and clean the hybrid battery cooling fan, and replace it if necessary. To prevent recurrence of the fault, install an intake air filter in the hybrid battery cooling system (see image). Also, check the operation and condition of the hybrid battery and replace it if necessary.
