Embracing the Electric Revolution: Navigating Changes in the Motor Industry

30/1/2024

Picture
The electric revolution has had a significant impact on every sector of the motor industry. Both small parts distributors and major car manufacturers are expected to be affected by this transformation in various ways. What does this mean for the wider automotive industry?
Important changes in 2023:
  • In February 2023, the European Parliament introduced a new law that will prohibit the sale of petrol and diesel cars starting from 2035. This decision sent shockwaves through the industry, as it not only threatens sales but also accelerates the European Union's commitment to combat climate change. Despite the introduction of stricter emissions standards in recent years, the focus on sustainability and incentives for consumers to adopt electric cars is likely to increase.
  • One of the countries most affected by this shift is Germany, which currently earns the most from fossil fuel vehicles. However, Germany has reached an agreement with the European Commission to produce climate-neutral e-fuel vehicles after the 2035 deadline. The European Union has committed to significantly reducing gas emissions from transportation by 2050 and has become a strong advocate for electric cars.
  • In March of this year, a coalition led by Germany and France challenged the EU legislation in Brussels and demanded changes. Other countries have joined this alliance, calling for a relaxation of the new legislation. Italy's business minister, in particular, expressed discontent, arguing that a forced transition to electric vehicles would harm the European car industry and benefit Chinese manufacturers.
  • With the proposed ban just 11 years away, the motor industry has only 132 months to adapt to the impending challenges.

What does this mean for the wider motor industry?

Technicians will need to acquire new skills and knowledge related to electric drivetrains, high voltage systems, battery technology, and specialized diagnostic equipment. It is a fact, that additional training and education will be needed to keep up with the evolving technologies of electric vehicles so Autodata already has you covered.
While electric cars generally require less maintenance compared to traditional combustion engine cars, mechanics will need to adjust their approach to both maintenance and repairs. They will need specialized tools and equipment to handle high-voltage systems safely, as well as diagnostic equipment and battery service tools.
Proficiency in both electric and traditional vehicles will be crucial during the transition period, along with access to high-quality service, maintenance, and repair information from manufacturers.
Autodata therefore already offers many different trainings and educational courses with which you will be ready to tackle any EV challenge. Each course contains a brief video explanation and a questionnaire that you can use to check the knowledge you have already acquired.

Furthermore, electric cars are gaining popularity and car manufacturers are investing heavily in the production of electric vehicles. This shift in demand will affect the automotive supply chain, as parts suppliers will need to focus more on providing components for electric vehicles. Battery technology innovations aim to address concerns regarding limited range and high costs, while improvements in charging time and infrastructure expansion aim to create a more convenient charging network.

There are several challenges to consider, including power grid capacities, load capacities, extreme weather performance, rare earth materials, and battery disposal. However, continuous research and development are being conducted to address these concerns and simplify the decision-making process for consumers. It is crucial for workshops to gradually prepare for the increasing prevalence of electric vehicles by keeping up with the latest technology, investing in training, and expanding staff skill sets.

That is why we invite you to secure your access to Autodata today to stay prepared for the transition with various trainings and insight to all the key information in the palm of your hand, anywhere and anytime.

The transition to electric cars will be gradual, but traditional vehicles will still remain present. Workshops in the automotive industry must embrace this evolving trend by preparing for the growth of electric vehicles. By staying informed and proactive, the motor industry can successfully navigate through this revolution.!
